 Early night w/ Autolux

Autolux @ Webster Hall 6/11.

Now, they are my favorite band. They have so much of what I loved about Failure and yet they are not Failure at all. Autolux are uniquely Autolux, taking some of my favorite things about rock music and making something new of it. Not real easy to do with guitar, bass, drums. They had some sequencing and plenty of toys for their guitars, but really they are a psychedelic/spacey/trippy college radio-friendly rock band using standard rock band elements. And they still sound like nothing else out there now. They are dark like Failure, cool like GVSB, hip and somber like the Velvet Underground but really not at all retro. Most songs are mid-tempo and none of them get stuck. They all pay very close attention to tone. Thank you Autolux for redeeming loud and moody rock music, my favorite kind.

Songwriting or playing lesson learned tonight: in every song, play less and ensure that every note or beat heard is truly special. When you play, play like you fucking mean it.

The set was too short. Of course, they were in the opening slot and it was to be expected. They have a good, understated stage presence with no talking between songs (that's always our rule because I suck at it - I get nervous and inadvertently insult the audience.) Their ambiance comes complete with homemade arty and primitive looking stage lights, silver painted matching guitars, matching haircuts and nearly matching outfits of long sleeved t-shirts and pants in matching tones for Greg and Eugene. Yet as planned out as things looked from the floor, they didn't feel at all pretentious. Instead I appreciated the effort toward mood and creating the right atmosphere for their sound. It all worked well together.

They were on at 8pm and off at 8:40pm. What's with this early show trend? Is this happening in all clubs now or is it just a Webster Hall thing? It's Saturday night for god's sake. Where am I going to take my caffeine buzz now?
