We're Learning
I was sick all last week. Well, nearly everybody I know either was or is sick. It was some sort of virus that I caught from one of my precious darlings on the beat. Some kids stay home from school but then keep their therapy appointments. Why? I don't get it.
As far as writing the new album goes, there's progress anyway. We're going to start implementing a new tecnnique called "Lock in." Laugh if you must, but this is where Alex, Mike and I lock ourselves in the basement and not come out until there's a new song. It's a reminder of an idea once handed to me by Charlie Jamison of Landspeed Record where to get through a writer's block he suggested writing one song every day, no matter how bad, short, or ridiculous it is. I loved the idea but just could never do it. I came up with my own variation. Every time you pick up your guitar, the first thing you play decide to make into a song - no matter how musical or unmusical it sounds. Force yourself to see the inherent value of all sound and make it musical.
Alex and I tried it and the lock-in idea for the first time yesterday and wrote a new song, a really good one too. So the little imposed structures seem to be working. And we didn't kill each other, which is the real triumph. This morning, the song is still good. That's two, count two new songs written in less than a year! Is this Prosolar Mechanics? Why yes, we're learning. And the kicker? The latest song is under TWO minutes long! ExModels would have been proud once.
