Pedal Power
Good bye, old friend.

I've made a big decision today; Fuck the Pod. It has its uses, and I am generally pleased with Line 6 and most of their gear - at least the gear I've had first hand experience with. Pod 1 is a handy amp modeler, and I see the Pod XT is indeed an improvement. I had the chance to try it out today against my trusty old Pod with Floorboard. It's a good thing to have if you want to record into your computer as well. Or, say you want to forego that backline and just play through the house PA. I don't know why you'd want to do that, but maybe you would. The Pod would be for you. But it's not for me. Not anymore. I've played on Line 6 gear for the past few years, but I finally owned up to the fact that there's nothing I can do with a Pod or Pod XT that can really come close to the good old clean sound of the Fender Twin. So I'm back to pedals.
 Exhibit A
First pedal is a Holy Grail (exhibit A, above). Why would someone with a 70's fender twin reverb want a reverb pedal? Well, my reverb is totally broken. Otherwise I wouldn't bother. But, this is a really nice and cute looking reverb unit. It's got a spring reverb, a large hall reverb and something called a "Flerb" which is a very cool sounding flanger/reverb combination effect. Lovely. I'm so pleased.
 Exhibit B
Sometimes, you need need more. That's where the classic tubescreamer comes in. It's not too much, but it's got the spirit, the grit, the teeth you can't get with just an overdriven tube amp alone. I don't know - maybe you can, but I can't. And I don't want to, because I like to get all soft and clean when an occassion presents itself. So I can keep my nice clean, round tones and punch it when I need it.
 Exhibit C
Next, of course, an old familiar friend of mine. Hullo muff. It's so cheap it will break if you use it too hard or too often. It's clearly of inferior quality to many other pedals I could have. But goddamn, the Big Muff has got what I need when I need to really get down and rock myself sick. This is a Russian made big muff - I give it a year, but that's only without regular gigs. But I can't find anything else that can do what this does, as well as it does it.
Now that I've gone back to boxes I am once again content with my sound. No more spooky software driven noise toys. Not for this mechanic, anyway. Back to basics. And had nearly a full day of messing with Mike and Alex today. We are working, yes we are. Stay tuned.
