The PMX Subspace Communication Station

I can’t think of a single damn reason I ought to be awake at this hour, but here I am, scanning the web for the 87th time today, looking for god knows what, fidgeting, and not sleeping. It’s just past 4 am here in New Jersey, and tomorrow I’m going to pay for this.

I have been in the lab, our sub basement communication station, since around 11pm working on a masterpiece. Okay, I don’t know if it’s a masterpiece, exactly. But I’ve been working on the same damned song for over a year now, in many different versions. One movement. Stars from Aircraft has seen revision, after revision, after revision in this band. It has it’s very own version done by Pieter K out on his fantabulous new album “Everything all the time” which is on Break Beat Science right this instant. You should go and buy it, really. Go get yourself to Amazon.com and hook it up. It just might change you. In fact, I'll bet it does.

I was relieved to find that I’d whittled away a good 5 hours tweaking yet another version of this song. Pleased because it was the first time I’d been able to get that absorbed in a piece of music of my own doing. I’m on a steep learning curve with some new banging technology, and my patience has been a pretty severe limitation. I normally can sit down in front of the Mac for about 15 minutes before I’m antsy to do something else. Anything else. Floss, clean the litter, watch commercials on television. I just can’t seem to get it together with this stuff. And I’ve spent countless hours fiddling with horrid sounding things too – only to feel cheap, empty when it’s over. And nowhere near closer to a finished piece of music.

That’s why I had to write, even though I really must get in bed.

You see, Stars from Aircraft is important. It has always been important. It’s the piece of music that holds the key to our future, what we will sound like, how we will continue to stay viable in a now stagnant genre of pop music. We’ve been writing the same fucking song for so long because we simply don’t have answers to those questions yet. Until now, maybe. Because I think tonight I stumbled onto something. You’ll just have to wait and see, like the rest of us.
